False economy to cut back on health and safety training?

In today’s economic climate, health and safety often has to take a back seat. However, as an employer you still have a legal duty to manage the health, safety and welfare of your employees, the costs of one of your employees having an accident and claiming compensation or you being prosecuted under health and safety law greatly exceed the costs of effective health and safety management.

In a recent case, a Garden Centre employee claimed £4500 in compensation after hurting his back whilst lifting a box - he had not been given manual handling training.
